It’s been an inspiring first six months for the Wairarapa Catchment Collective as we’ve hit the ground running since launching in June 2024. Despite a slow start due to funding delays, the energy and enthusiasm from our catchment groups have turned challenges into milestones, showcasing what’s possible when communities unite for a shared purpose.
A Collective Vision in Action
From the outset, our vision has been to empower a thriving network of catchment communities. And in just half a year, we are making good progress towards this. With the support of key partners Greater Wellington, Mountains to Sea Wellington, and MPI On Farm Support, we’ve worked to streamline access to vital resources and funding.
Building a Strong Foundation
New committee members and key appointments of Project Lead, Kirsty McCarthy and Partnership Lead, John Hart, have enabled the Collective to support ten established catchment groups across the region and new emerging groups. Together with our partners and catchment groups, we’ve:
Held six well-attended events, including our launch and AGM, and an inspiring Wānanga featuring Sam the Trap Man.
Facilitated nine introductory meetings and 14 planning sessions - including pest control planning and action planning with Greater Wellington.
Engaged with 549 landowners and connected two schools with catchment groups.
Ran 14 water monitoring activities delivered with Maddy Glover through Mountains to Sea Wellington’s Wai Connection programme.
Supported four community events with MPI On Farm Support and funding from the Wairarapa Recovery Fund.
Secured successful funding applications for three groups.
Launched a pest animal management project with expert advisor John Bissell from Backblocks Environmental Management.
Growing Awareness and Connection
We’ve also focused on strengthening our collective voice. With a new brand identity, website, social media channels, and newsletters, we’re creating stronger networks to share knowledge and inspire action.
Looking Ahead
This is just the beginning. We’ve been impressed by the passion and dedication of the catchment groups working hard on their action plans and projects to improve the health and resilience of their catchments and communities. We can’t wait to see what 2025 brings as we continue to support catchment groups to grow, connect, and thrive.
